MCB vs RCCB vs MCCB: Which Protection Device Do You Actually Need?

If you’re setting up an electrical panel — whether for a home, shop, or factory — you’ll
run into three similar-sounding devices: MCB, RCCB, and MCCB. They all look like
switches sitting in a distribution board, but they protect against completely different
things, and using the wrong one can leave your wiring (or your people) unprotected.

Quick answer: An MCB protects wiring from overload and short-circuit current up
to 100A. An RCCB protects people from electric shock by detecting current leakage
to earth. An MCCB does the job of an MCB but for much higher current ratings,
typically used in industrial and commercial panels.

What is an MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker)?

An MCB automatically switches off the circuit when it senses excess current — caused
by overloading a circuit or a short circuit. It’s the standard protection device in almost every home and small commercial distribution board today, having replaced old rewireable fuses. MCBs from brands like Siemens and Legrand are rated for currents typically between 0.5A and 100A and are classified by trip curve (Type B, C, D) depending on the load type.

What is an RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker)?

An RCCB doesn’t care about overload — it’s designed purely for human safety. It continuously compares the current going into a circuit versus the current coming back. If even a small amount is leaking (say, through a person touching a live wire, or damaged insulation), it trips within milliseconds. This is why the National Electrical Code and most Indian building norms now recommend an RCCB on every home’s main incoming supply, especially for bathroom and kitchen circuits.

What is an MCCB (Moulded Case Circuit Breaker)?

An MCCB is essentially a heavier-duty MCB, built for current ratings from 63A up to 1600A or more. You’ll find MCCBs guarding the main incomer of a factory panel, a large HVAC system, or a commercial building’s floor-wise distribution — anywhere the load is too large for a standard MCB to handle safely.

Do You Need All Three?

In most well-designed installations, yes — they work together, not as alternatives:

  • MCCB at the main incoming supply (high current protection)
  • RCCB downstream for shock protection
  • MCB on individual final circuits (lights, sockets, AC points)

Choosing the Right Brand and Rating

Getting the pole configuration (SP, DP, TP, TPN, FP), trip curve, and sensitivity (for RCCBs, usually 30mA for human safety or 100–300mA for fire protection) right is critical — an undersized or wrongly rated device either nuisance-trips constantly or fails to protect at all.
